How to Let Things Go (Even If They’re Working)

It’s summer. The sun is high, the days are long, and everything is telling you to slow down, breathe, and savor life. And yet, for high-achievers, creators, and ambitious entrepreneurs, this season of ease can stir a deep discomfort. Especially when it’s time to let go—not just of what’s broken or draining—but of what’s working.

Yes, you heard that right. Sometimes, we need to walk away from the things that are still performing well, still producing, still profitable… but no longer aligned.

So let’s talk about it—because last summer, I was this close to burning my entire business to the ground. So this years, I promised myself to say no to projects that don’t align with my values—even if they’re profitable.

Here’s your summer permission slip to release what no longer fits, even if it looks like it still does.

The Illusion of “Working”

First things first: just because something is “working” doesn’t mean it’s right for you anymore.

Maybe your offer still sells.
Your content still gets engagement.
Your client roster is full.
The inbox is buzzing.
On paper, everything is fine.

But in your body? You feel tight. Restless. Bored. Misaligned.

That’s your inner compass trying to get your attention.

Summer has a way of pulling these truths to the surface. With its natural rhythm of slowing down, it invites us to tune in, get honest, and release what’s heavy—even if that heaviness is wrapped in success.

Why letting go feels so hard (especially when things are “good”)

Letting go of something that’s clearly not working? That’s challenging, but logical.

Letting go of something that’s working enough? That’s terrifying.

Because it invites doubt:

  • “Am I being ungrateful?”
  • “What if the next thing doesn’t work?”
  • “Am I sabotaging myself?”
  • “Will people think I’m flaky?”

These questions come from fear—fear of the unknown, of wasted effort, of judgment.

But here’s a gentle reminder: evolution requires shedding. And growth rarely looks like clinging.

You’re not ungrateful. You’re just growing.

Signs It’s Time to Let Go (Even If It’s Working)

Here are some summer cues that it might be time to release:

  • You dread doing it even though you used to love it.
  • You’ve outgrown the container. The offer, platform, or routine doesn’t reflect your next-level vision.
  • You feel stuck in a loop. There’s no excitement, no curiosity—just autopilot.
  • You’re sustaining, not expanding. Your energy is going toward maintaining, not innovating.
  • You’re more committed to the image than the impact. You keep it alive because it looks good, not because it feels good.

If any of these resonate, you’re not alone. You’re just in transition. And that’s not only okay—it’s necessary.

A Summer Reframe: Think Like Nature

Nature lets go all the time.

Trees drop their leaves.
Flowers bloom, then wither.
Tides roll in, and out.
The sun sets every day.

What if we took our cue from the season? Summer isn’t about clinging. It’s about basking in what’s real, pruning what’s dead, and creating space for new things to grow.

Letting go doesn’t mean the thing was a mistake.
It just means it’s no longer meant to come with you.

How to Let Go Gracefully (Without Burning It All Down)

You don’t need to make a dramatic exit. You don’t need to announce your pivot with a bang. Here’s a softer, more sustainable approach:

STEP #1 – Acknowledge the Purpose It Served

Start with gratitude. What did this offer, client, habit, or role give you? How did it shape your business? Your confidence? Your creativity?

Journal on it. Speak it aloud. Honor it.

STEP #2 – Identify What You’re Making Space For

Letting go is easier when you’re clear on what you’re moving toward. Is it more time freedom? A new creative direction? A business that supports your lifestyle instead of consuming it?

Write out the vision. Let it be dreamy and grounded at once.

STEP #3 – Make a Gentle Exit Plan

Whether you’re retiring an offer, ending a collaboration, or shifting your content strategy—plan your exit.

Wrap up well. Communicate with kindness. Protect your reputation. Protect your energy.

STEP #4 – Reallocate the Energy

When you let go, you don’t just lose something—you gain space. Where will you redirect that time, focus, and energy? Don’t let it get absorbed by busywork or fear. Use it for the new, the aligned, the expansive.

STEL #5 – Trust the Transition

There’s a weird, wobbly space between letting go and landing the next thing. Don’t rush it. Let summer hold you in the in-between. You are not falling behind. You are recalibrating.

Real Talk: It’s Not Always Comfortable

You may feel guilt, doubt yourself and even mourn the version of you who once loved this thing.

That’s part of it.

Letting go isn’t always neat. Sometimes it’s messy, emotional, awkward. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

What matters is that you’re brave enough to choose alignment over autopilot.

A Summer Quickie Exercise: The Let-Go List

Take 10 minutes and write two columns:

  • Column A: “It’s Working…” (List all the things that are “fine” but feel off.)
  • Column B: “But I’m Ready For…” (List what your soul is craving instead.)

Then ask yourself:

What one small thing can I release this month to create space for what I truly want?

It doesn’t have to be drastic. It could be:

  • Retiring a passive offer that no longer excites you.
  • Saying no to a recurring meeting that drains you.
  • Pausing a content format that feels forced.

Start small. Let summer be your softness.

Final Words: You’re Allowed to Evolve

You don’t need to justify your evolution to anyone—not even your past self.

Letting go, even of things that are working, is a radical act of self-trust.

So take a deep breath.
Feel the warmth on your skin.
Unclench.

And let this be the summer you stop settling for “good enough” and start creating space for what feels deeply right.

Wondering what summer looks like on my end? My summer rhythm looks like time at the cottage, getting lost in books, moving through pilates flows, and riding the waves….
