Communication Plan 101

Communication Plan 101

You are ready to launch your new online business or a new offering (product or service), but you don’t know how you will tell everyone.

You need a communication plan! And you need one even if you have a good email list or many followers on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn.

A communication plan is your roadmap for delivering your message to your audience, your ICA (Ideal Customer or Community Avatar).

Let’s get started because planning is everything!

Here are the elements that should be included in your communication plan:

Goals

What do you want as a result of your communication plan? Get more followers, more sales, and build trust? Identify one goal for your first communication plan.

Audience

Who are you trying to reach? Who’s your ICA (Ideal Customers or Community Avatar)? Be specific because you can’t reach everyone!

Key messages

What key messages must your audience know to achieve your goals (get more followers, more sales, build trust)? You don’t want to have more than three key messages.

Your key messages should be simple and address the question, “What’s in it for me?”

Communication strategy

How are you going to get your message out there? Via social media, Newsletters, or speeches?

Pick the communication strategy that suits your goals.

Budget

What’s your budget to get your message out there? Again be specific. If you have a budget, you may decide to use Facebook Ads.

You may pick the Newsletters to communicate with your audience if you don’t have money.

Timeline

When do you want to communicate with your audience, and for how long? Set a timeline!

A timeline will allow you to plan all the other steps for a successful communication plan.

Results Expected

How do you know that you have reached your goals? Setting in advance your goal and the results you are expecting will help you evaluate your campaign.

Again, be specific.

You want to get more sales, fantastic, but how many sales?

Remember, all your communication activities must work together to help you achieve your business goals.
